Cambridge soundworks newton series mc2004/17/2024 ![]() I took advantage of their 45 day trial policy, set them up at home, and now I've got some truly high-end sounding speakers for bargain basement money. Unfortunately, the setup at the CSW store I went to didn't do these speakers justice: they had them mounted to the wall, and I really think these speakers should be on stands to sound their best. ![]() I'd highly recommend these speakers to anyone in the market for small, satellite-type speakers. Because of their small size, I can have them about 8' from the front wall of my living room (which is about 12' wide by 24' deep) and they completely fill the room with sound. Probably the highest praise I can give the Newtons is that I'm now selling off my surround equipment. No preamp, no EQ, no $200 interconnects, and I've got what I'm pretty sure is a VERY accurate reproduction of what was actually recorded. The encouraging thing is, the simpler the set up, the more these speakers shine! Right now I've got a line out from my DVD player to the Newton P500 sub crossover (which BTW is another fantastic unit), high-pass out to a Denon amp, and some decent speaker wire to MC200's. I've had the speakers for a little over a month now, and I've set them up all sorts of different ways. Over a decade of design experience has gone into the new Cambridge SoundWorks Newton Series MC50 satellite speaker, which is why it is perhaps the finest example of a high performance, ultra-compact satellite speaker available today. Better yet, the P200 sub works its magic on movie soundtracks and music with equal enthusiasm, delivering deep bass that's felt as well as heard.Where to start? I've finally found a pair of affordable speakers that let you hear what you're supposed to hear: everything that's on the CD!! No details lost, no "warmth" added. The Newton's comfort with dynamic, special-effects-laden DVDs surprised us the little system can play louder than most folks will need it to (in small to midsized rooms). The MC150's dialogue tonality was very good, and the surround effects were nicely handled. As we said, little speakers aren't usually up to the task of reproducing the full depth and scope of classical music.Īh, but the Zoolander DVD's beat-heavy soundtrack strutted and throbbed in all the right places. Classical music, always a tough test for sub/sat systems, revealed the Newton's midrange to be a tad lightweight. On the other hand, the reduced high-frequency detail softens the edgy grit on CDs and DVDs that aren't recorded as cleanly as the Femmes. A good start, but we felt that the guitars and the cymbals were slightly muted. A compact two-way ''satellite'' main speaker, the MC200 is designed for easy placement, elegant appearance, and superb fidelity. Our old Violent Femmes CDs rocked and rolled with abandon, and a big part of that energy came from Brian Ritchie's snarling stand-up bass. It's also compact, measuring just 13.5 by 12.0 by 13.0 inches and weighing 30 pounds. This 200-watt sub can reach down to a room shaking 25Hz. Cambridge SoundWorks' Newton Theater MC200.2. Tucked in on the P200's rear you'll find a variable 60Hz to 200Hz low-pass crossover, a 0-degree to 180-degree phase switch, speaker-level/line-level inputs, and a video EQ control that bumps up the bass for greater theater impact. Series P200 subwoofer delivers on this score, pairing a powerful 200-watt BASH. Cambridge SoundWorks Newton Series MC300 Main/Center Speaker (Each), White. ![]() A gently curved grille covers the sub's 10-inch, polymer-laminated woofer. Most subs are drab-looking boxes, so we were pleasantly surprised by the P200's sculpted, slate-gray cabinet. Well, it is different-the Newton's sats are made of glass-fiber-reinforced ABS plastic, and their rounded shape minimizes cabinet resonance. ![]() Pick up one of the sats, and you'll notice that it feels more solid than the typical fiberboard or plastic speaker. The Newton Theater MC100.2 package includes four MC100 sats, a MC150 center speaker, and a frisky sub, the P200. It's a sweet-sounding system, and you don't have to take our word for it because Cambridge sells the MC100.2 with a 45-day in-home trial. Which brings us to a fine example of the breed, Cambridge SoundWorks' newest Newton ensemble, the Theater MC100.2. It's easy to understand the logic and popularity of home-theater speaker packages: not only do the engineers take the guesswork out of assembling a matched set of speakers, but the coordinated styling of the kit looks a lot nicer than a hodgepodge grouping of different designs. ![]()
